O'Grady is a native of Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. She was raised by her parents who resided in Wheaton located in Illinois and then graduated in 1981, with a degree from Wheaton-North High School. She appeared on a few commercials for television before moving from Illinois to Los Angeles. The first time she worked, O'Grady was a Montgomery Ward model, where she was also featured in several commercials. She debuted on screen in 1988 in the romantic comedy she's Having a Baby. She was then cast as the main character in ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. The actress has also appeared as a guest and appeared on independent movies and television shows. Donna Abandando was her first major role on ABC's police thriller NYPD Blue. The role of the tall, blonde team secretary played from 1993-96. For each of those years, she received an Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance of Drama Series.
